Definition

Methods and techniques that make AI model decisions understandable to humans, enabling trust, validation, and contestation of automated decisions.

Explainable AI (XAI) encompasses methods and techniques that make artificial intelligence model decisions understandable to humans. XAI provides transparency into how models arrive at outputs, enabling stakeholders to trust, validate, and contest automated decisions.

Under POPIA, GDPR, and emerging African data protection laws, individuals have the right to an explanation of automated decisions. XAI is therefore not just a technical capability but a legal requirement for enterprises using AI in credit, employment, insurance, and other high-stakes domains.
